Second Lieutenant John P. Rooney was born in Princeton, New Jersey. His family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he lived for most of his life. He attended the United States Naval Academy from June 2020 to May 2024. He graduated and commissioned with a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Operations in May 2024. Following graduation and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) in the Marine Corps, 2nd Lt Rooney attended and graduated the Basic Officer Course at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia in December 2024. Upon graduation, 2nd Lt Rooney reported to the Marine Detachment - Fort Gordon, to attend the Cyber Warfare Officer Transition Course (CWOTC) where he graduated with the MOS of 1702. 2nd Lt Rooney reported to DCO-IDM Company, 8th Communication Battalion in September 2025 where he is currently serving as the First Platoon, DCO-IDM Company Platoon Commander.
